The Olympics is a sports event that is hosted internationally. It began in Greece three thousand years ago. Back in Greece, the Olympic games were conducted once every four years. But, during the Christian era, it was abolished and was revived only in 1896. From then on, it took place every four years, except during World Wars – I and II.

After the revival, the first modern Olympics were in Athens in 1896. Almost 280 athletes from 12 nations participated. After this, in the year 1994, the summer and winter Olympic Games were held separately, alternating every two years in the four-year period. In the Olympics, every event has three winners. A gold medal for first place, a silver medal for second place and a bronze medal for third place. The 2020 Summer Olympics which was delayed by a year due to COVID-19 is happening in Tokyo, Japan. It is happening from 23rd July 2021 to 8th August 2021.

When you compare the ancient and modern Olympics, you will know that earlier it was organized to salute the Greek Gods, conducted in the name of God Zeus. And, now it is organized to appreciate the talents of the athletes worldwide. The ancient Olympics had events in acting, music, oral skills, and so on. In the modern Olympics, the games are athletic in nature.

Types of Olympic Games:

Summer Olympic Games

Games of the Olympiad as it is popularly called happens once every four years. Many countries have hosted the Summer Olympics – USA – 4 times, UK – 3 times, France, Australia, Germany, Greece and Japan have all hosted twice.

Winter Olympic Games

After seeing the success of the Summer Olympic Games, the Winter Olympic Games were held. The sports are water and ice based. The first winter Olympic Games were held in the year 1924 in France.

Paralympic games

The Paralympics are games conducted for athletes of different disabilities. They are held immediately after the summer and winter Olympics. The Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee.

Youth Olympic Games

The Youth Olympic Games are the Olympic Games held for athletes between the age of 14 and 18 years. It is conducted in consistency with the Summer and Winter modern Olympic format. The Youth Olympic Games is a version of the discontinued World Youth Games.
